Sapulut Forest Development Sdn Bhd (SFDSB), in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), organized the Small Act Better World Programme 2023 as part of its community development efforts in Kampung Tataluan and Kampung Bangau.
This program signifies the first-ever partnership between SFDSB and UMS in these villages. It involved 42 students from various fields of study, accompanied by a dedicated lecturer. The two-day program took place from 6th June to 7th June 2023.

The program aims to foster rapport between SFDSB, stakeholders, and related agencies/institutions while raising environmental awareness among the younger generation. Additionally, it supported the Sabah Forestry campaign on tree planting by actively engaging with the community. All villagers, including children, actively participated in the program.
UMS organized fun games on the first day to break the ice and build connections with the children. An educational session was conducted with the children during the program to enhance the interaction. On the final day, SFDSB organized two significant activities: tree planting and Longhouse painting. SFDSB prepared 385 “Nauclea Orientalis” seeds, also known as “Bangkal” locally, which are sourced from the Philippines. These fast-growing trees are suitable for riverside planting to prevent soil erosion.
The students from UMS greatly enjoyed these activities, as they gained practical experience in tree planting techniques and wall painting, which will benefit them in the future. The teams were divided into three groups: Group 1 and Group 2 focused on seed planting, while Group 3 supervised the Longhouse painting. The day was concluded with an Environmental awareness briefing for the children and villagers, followed by quizzes from the UMS students to assess their understanding.
